Not bad

That sounds like a pretty good world. Of course, you concentrated on describing the outcome and shorted development of the logical premises that would make it happen, but you did give a few hints.

I had the same reaction as Tony to the idea of basing SS on the stock market; kind of sending today's idea back in time, and today too it's a hard sell after a crash.

As for "liberals would question a continuous up market under conservative leadership"--well, economists would question it too. Nobody disputes that business cycles happen, and economists differ mainly on whether intervention damps the downside or makes it worse.

"sponsered the UN with perhaps a better framework." That's interesting. Something Larry said a long time ago helped me understand the conservative loathing of the UN: It's not a democratic institution, it's a council of governments, and the American people don't get to elect representatives to it. Now, if you're positing a more democratic UN, you start down the slippery slope that might then make a world government more feasible. Remove the objection that the UN is not democratic, and what's left is the narrower, one might say parochial, objection based on simple nationalism.

One of the reasons I find alternate universes so much fun is that, done right, they illuminate the old saying, "be careful what you ask for, you just might get it!".
