There were the airplanes and nukes available. What we were told was that some ballistic missiles were very nearly available.
And, my assumption is, that there were short-range tactical missiles which could deliver nukes. Heck, the US Army had nuclear shells for, I believe, the 155 mm. Long Tom artillery piece.
If the only delivery system was the Iluyshins, they may not have gotten through, though how close them may have had to get is another question.
An invasion fleet at the landing is a very, very concentrated target. The upside is that those ships can throw one helluva lot of metal into a relatively small volume of air. There would have been fierce air cover, too, and I doubt if a bomber could have made it, even flying very high.
The Japanese Kamikazes were effective, but they still lost a lot. Still effective. We had a family friend who was a physician on a ship which was under attack by them, and finally hit. Said the folks aboard where scared to death of kamikazes, so they didn't all chicken out or get weeded. Also said it made a mess of the ship and a lot of people.
