Ok, I'll postulate a little more. I'll back up a little, so we get the alternate history better established.
Nixon gives the green light for Operation Northwoods and the massive invasion of Cuba begins. As the marines are boarding Landing Craft Vehicles in Florida and the 82nd Airborne is going over plans for the jump at first dawn, Bombers lift off from Air bases all across the United States. The bombers, loaded with conventional bombs queue up over the gulf of Mexico, as SAC Bombers with nuclear bombs are ready on the flightlines with orders to fly over the North Pole unless called off.
Communication is heavy between Moscow and Cuba, as the Soviet commander in Cuba pushes his men to get the newly arrived Frog Missiles operational. The night turns out to be a long one as wave after wave of bombers cross over Cuba, dropping ordinance on reinforced bunkers and unfinished missile launchers. Some time in the night communication with Moscow is cut off and can't be revived. At 0420 the commander gets word from his subordinates that the northern coast of Cuba looks like Normandy. Knowing that the beach defenses aren't adequate to repel an invasion force so large, he order the launch of the 2 remaining undamaged IL-28 bombers. Their payload: 1 nuclear bomb each. They don't even make it to the end of the runway before going up in flames. The Commander sends a runner to the bunker hiding his Mobile Frog M<issile launchers. The runner returns 15 minutes later with an affirmative, they are ready to launch. "Launch Launch Launch" he screams. At 0510 the Frog Missile Launchers Roll out and a minute later six tactical Nuclear Tipped missiles rocket into the air.
The boys on the landing craft never knew what hit them.
Nixon, who has been up all night in the warroom hears word over the radio that his entire invasion force has been ahnilated by multiple tactical warheads. Nixon breaks down on the warroom floor as his aides start racing around the room in a panic. The generals around him, start to console him and lay out plans to begin strikes on Moscow.
The B-52s which have been in the air for 3 hours now start hearing the cahtter on SAC command that nukes have been dropped on our boys. High over Canada, the lights stay green.
Nixon leaves the warroom and heads for his private office to get Kruschev on the phone. He stops, turns to the Air Force General Curtis Lemay. "When did you say those *&$# bombers will be over Moscow?"
"Well Sir, 8 hours, but if we launch the Missiles now, they'll be their in 3."
"I don't want to launch any *&$# missiles! Turn those bombers around, right Now"
"But, Mr President we have to retaliate!"
"Now General", he turns his head to his secretary "Get me Kruschev on the horn"
"He's holding right now, Mr President"

deal made to stand down after a small yield nuclear bomb is dropped on one of Cuba's ports.

Nixon is seen as a hero by most Americans for about 6 months. They are still apprehensive, but glad Nixon had the courage to stand up to the soviets and was miraculously able to keep it from escalating to WWIII. After about a year Nixon's popularity takes a nosedive as Americans start to reflect on the cost in blood. The decision to invade Cuba is seen as a disaster and calls for Nixon to be impeached run rampant. After weathering the pressure for another 6 months nixon resigns, and his VP is sworn in.
Meanwhile in Southeast Asia, Vietnam, the French pull out of Vietnam. The communist's easily quell any remaining resistance by the populace in the south.
The US adapts a more Isolationist stance in the world. Missile Development is stepped up, to protect herself at longer ranges. NATO pleads with the US to stay in Europe. The US agrees, reluctantly.
that's about as far as I'll take it tonight, I don't know if I'll continue it as it is very time consuming. Also I know Robert was hoping to get some insight into the conservative mind with his exercise, but I'm a fairly moderate conservative, so I doubt it will be of much help to him. Plus this is certainly not my idea of Utopia. In fact its a nightmare scenario.
