Ideally, you're right.
In a nation of limited government, where the government was dealing with policies, defense, and those things that a Federal government should be tasked with, universal suffrage makes sense.
However, our current Federal government has, as its primary task, redistribution of wealth. Almost two-thirds of the budget is devoted to this in one form or another.
That is, taking money from people who earn it, and giving it to people who didn't. With the primary function being to gain the votes of the recipients.
I'm sorry, but this puts money into play in the voting situation. I don't have to like it, but there it is.
