To me, the point of the exercize isn't to identify the one cusp in history at which the country took a wrong turn, in the eyes of conservatives. Rather, I picked a cusp that seems have a general consensus among conservatives to have been the most important one in the last century, as a starting point for building a model of a more perfect world according to conservative beliefs. The object is to produce a picture of the world we'd be living in now if conservatives had won a big battle. It's the classic alternate history exercize: Change one important event in history, like the outcome of the Battle of Agincourt, even if the choice is arbitrary, and then see what develops logically from that one change. In scientific terms, this amounts to changing a single variable for the sake of simplicity. It may be artificial and contrived, but it makes the problem manageable. It's only a hypothetical exercize.
