Tom Matula replies: You say that like its a something bad. Actually NASA NEEDS to start facusing on economic goals if it wants to make VSE sustainable. If that means delaying the search for Mars bacteria or alien planets for a while so be it, its not like they are going anywhere. They'll still be there for future generatiosn to discover once NASA pulls in weight in ensuring Earth has a future.

Like the scientists on the Titanic you seem more interested in studying the iceberg then in helping to save the ship. And you wonder why Mars is yesterday's news....
