Many people come and came to America for work. Others came to escape persecution or to live some kind of life style they had the freedom to live here, but not their place of origin. The economic issues are important for the first case. There are a lot of people who unlike me actually want to go to Mars and found a colony just because they think it is the right thing to do. I support them, but don't have any desire to face that much risk or discomfort personally. It would take a big financial payoff to get me there like a high paying 3 year assignment to start up a terraforming gas factory once travel to Mars was well established.
The thing is the economics aren't likely to favor anyone living in space to do any job where just living is extremely costly and difficult to support. Being able to supply most needs from local resources is a critical requirement IMO before any space activity is likely to be economical. The second key requirement is cheap access to space.

Mark
