For God's sake, stop getting your news from the TV set.

In 1989, they had an earthquake where I live. There was a lot of damage in some areas, and people were killed. There was little or no damage or casualties in most areas. The news cameras and reporters sat in those crushed city blocks and next to those flat freeways for days, taking pictures of devastation. My parents were beside themselves with terror until I called them and told them that there had been no serious damage anywhere around me, or in most of the Bay area. All they had seen was collapsed buildings, burning structures, and flattened freeways, over and over again.

There is no doubt that New Orleans is in serious trouble, and that many people have died. I also have no doubt that in a much shorter time than people think, the survivors will be helped and reconstruction will begin.

This is what happened prior to the hurricane, including the evacuation order, the declaration of a disaster area, and the beginning of the deployment of the National Guard. I don't know how many people stayed put, or why. I don't know if they just decided to ride it out, or if they couldn't get transportation. Neither do you.

You're getting anecdotes, microphones stuck in faces, and cameramen shooting Pulitzer material, and people on both sides with political axes to grind. Wait for the facts, or find them yourself.
