re: East and West

The US was not occupying Japan or Germany (no more than the UK was occupying Belgium (yes, there was a UK military base in Emblem, near Antwerp)), but all the western nations were helping each other to prevent a soviet invasion.

When I read some americans think that they were occupying Germany as much as they are now occupying Iraq, then thre must be something seriously wrong in their reasoning.
For Europe there was rebuilding peace among nations with the same common cultural heritage and a common potential enemy.
Rebuilding peace was done together, which washed any humiliation the germans might have felt.
For Iraq, there are different cultures, no friends to each other and all of them aliens to the occupier, no outside enemy and continuous violence and especially humiliation.
