re: What is freedom?

"But is their concept of freedom the same as ours? I am not asking a rhetorical question."

Al Qaeda is a cult. Our concept of freedom was in Iraq before the roman empire existed.
A factor in our decision to change the regime in Iraq was due to political influence of Iraqis in America who left Saddam's little hell hole.

There are Islamic countries which are democracies. Islam considers it's itself part of the same hertiage as Jewish and Christian beliefs. There is nothing "alien" about the middle east- it is the cradle of western civilization.
Al Qaeda's cult is alien to the middle east.
The reasons why al Qaada has any traction is because the people is middle east have the normal human behaviour of blaming everyone else for their problems instead of confronting problems which they can solve- though of course this requires work and an effort to understand these problems.
The main premise of Al Qaada's cult is the present Islam culture-political framework is corrupted with the obvious solution of looking back at eariler time as the answer. Al Qaada is trying to solve a problem, but these wack jobs are not well educated and don't understand the present situation or their history. They are similar to Marxists trying to fix what wrong- they think they smart, but they are utterly clueless and their simplistic view is similar to trying fit a square peg in a round hole- if they actually had The Answer they wouldn't make a State such Afghanistan nor would require suicide bomber and their oppressive tactics. In simple terms, al Qaada is fighting God and they getting their butt kicked. Maybe it they surrendered to God they would get somewhere.
