Some religions create a separation between human beings and divinity.

If a religion has set up that dichotomy, then it's impossible not to think of God as an individual, usually with human attributes and personality.

Mystic traditions in all the major religions, including Christianity, seek to break down the psychological separation between divine and human by integrating everything in one great dance, sort of like a spiritual universal string theory.

If the universe is in fact the divinity, that means there is likely no conscious direction of its existence. Probably. For all we know, with our limited senses and our likewise limited brains.

The divinity still would have awareness, though: us. Because, if the wall is down, we humans become integral parts of the universe, not above the beasts and below the angels. After being raised with a cosmic view of ourselves as favorite children of an all-knowing and benevolent, if distant, Parent, some people find this deeply disturbing.

Personally, I rather like the idea of being a neuron.
