My mother is a fundamentalist and a liberal Democrat, i.e. believes in the literal truth of the Bible. I was also brought up as a Christian (Methodist). However around the age of five, I started asking questions about "first cause" and inconsistencies in the Bible. The answers I got were such obvious nonsense that even as a 6 year-old, I could see that people either were not thinking logically or lying to me. At a very early age, I learned to remain courteous to other people's opinions on religion and politics while keeping quiet about my own views (there's no point in arguing with hypocrites and fanatics).
