Robert has touched upon this but coming up with something that is truely random is very difficult. Most digital "random" number generators will create a recognizable pattern if they're displayed the right way, e.g. have the "random" digits drive pixels on a CRT. Of course a fractal like a Mandelbrot dragon was deliberately designed to produce interesting patterns. Having a recognizable shape arising from a chaotic system is a big clue that perhaps something like this is driving fundamental physics. After presenting the results of a Monte Carlo simulation, one of the typical "screw questions" that comes up during Q&A is "What random number generator did you use?" I always cut that one off by replying that I use the digits of Pi. I have a table of Pi calculated to 10 million digits. My random number generator just grabs numbers in 6 digit hunks until the table is exhausted and then it restarts the table. The statistics that I get from that process are absolutely clean.
