re: "why there is such polarization?"

Between changing my granddaughters' diapers, and taking my 82 year old blind mother to the doctor...and various other tasks...I have contemplated this question quite extensively.

The answer is: The need for control.....emanating from fear.
I know how simplistic this sounds, however it is the bottom line.It is far from simple, though. Fear takes on trillions of perspectives, ranging from the mother who fears her child will go hungry, to the fear of having a man in a state of temporary authority making decisions for us that we did not agree to.

It seems to me that, depending on our own deep seated issues that we are not even aware of unless we self examine, this is the determining factor of our beliefs.

My brother is a right wing extremist. His thought process is that he genuinely feels he knows what is best for the country. My brother is an alcoholic. He doesn't even know what is best for himself.
One of my fears is extremism in any form....but what determines my definition of extremism?....My lifes' experiences and the conclusions I have formulated.
I have a fear of re-acting vs. acting....due solely on my life thus far...what makes any one of us feel we know the answer to ANYTHING????....Our lifes' experiences and the conclusions we have drawn.

Well....trillions of perspectives=trillions of opinions=polarization....we all want to think we have the answer....but on many levels we barely know the questions for ourselves...let alone the country.

We do the best we can....until we know how to do it better....but better for whom?....The answer is there is no answer.
