I sent a mixed message when I let myself get caught up in arguing the issue of the polar extremes of security-through-isolation versus security-through-control. Reducing the polarization isn't going to be easy for either one of us, is it?
Let's see if we can at least agree on a fundamental premise as a starting point:
The extreme polarization of the last few years has been bad for America.
Therefore, since it's bad for America, as Americans we have a duty to fix the problem.
The Local Corollary: It's been pretty bad for the HabitableZone as well. Self-interest is icing on the patriotic cake.
Not all Zoners are Americans. A further corollary:
Extreme polarization in America is bad for the world as a whole. We could use everybody's support in doing something about it.
I have lots of things to do today, so I won't be able to engage in an intensive discussion of the question. Maybe that's a good thing--the more I post, the more likely it is that I'll go off on a tangent. For today, how about we set our sights no higher than considering just these fundamental propositions and whether they represent a worthy goal?
