History is full of decadent and apathetic populations that fell to a society with a greater sense of purpose. You think we're immune?
If you have to wait until you're face to face with a terrorist in the United States to fight, it's too damn late.
Of COURSE almost all Americans would fight if enemy armies were coming over the border. So what? Does that mean you wait for that? Our enemies in WWII weren't even in this hemisphere, much less on our borders. How many enemy attacks did the United States suffer on its own soil during all of WWII? I count one. Two, if you want to be 100 percent accurate. Total civilian U.S. deaths on American soil for all of WWII: 74.
This is two percent of the civilian casualties from 9/11. The Japanese were targeting our Navy, with marked military planes and uniformed pilots. The terrorists, looking like anyone else, are targeting all of us.
The rules and the weapons aren't the same, any more. Enemies did come over our border to kill us, yet the U.S.--both parties--can't even marshall the will to slap effective controls on those borders. What would it take?
Either we have to try to change things where this philosophy is being bred, or, like Israel, resign ourselves to permanent terrorist attacks, and hope to God nobody gets a weapon sufficient to do serious physical and economic damage to our nation.
You can actually make a case for either of these alternatives, but you don't have a lot of other choices.
