Sure, whether polarization is good or bad is a matter of degree. It'd be more dangerous if we all agreed all the time. That's how lemmings march right off the cliff. Finding the optimum amount of polarization is part of finding the political center.
Don't read too much into the boys' focus on gender. Part of it's that maybe we're a bit self-conscious about the overwhelmingly male population, and feel we're missing out on important perspectives. Just as important, though, sometimes the firehose of testosterone gets a little old even for those of us of the guy persuasion. Sometimes we just need an excuse to stop fighting, and traditionally "shhh! there's a lady present!" is the perfect face-saving excuse. It's not actually about you, it's more just boys being boys.
