Tom, everything you just said about your philosophy in this post, I've read and understood in your previous posts.
The problem is that you're guilty of polarization yourself by creating this class of Americans that seem to give you the heebie jeebies. In your responses to people critical of Bush and the war you've given the distinct impression that every one of us with that position fall into your category of complete and utter reconciliation to evil. Often you don't come right out and say it but it's immediately your first response to launch into a tirade about those liberals and Democrats that want to give the country away to the bad guys.
You don't even begin by acknowledging any truth someone might have spoken or that they may have arrived at their position by extensive non-partisan research and extensive soul-searching. Without that formality, the immediate and very valid assumption is that your tirade against the left is absolutely directed at the source of the post you're commenting on.
Go back and reread what you just posted. Nowhere in there do you make any concession that an individual against Bush and his foreign entanglements could be driven by anything other than partisan blindness or complete naivety.
I know absolutely that everyone that posts on here understands completely the evil and depravity we're facing in the world. The problem though is that evil people haven't changed a lick throughout history and there's this huge volume of information in our history books that tell us exactly the consequences of overreacting to it. That's not to say that a reaction isn't necessary. Your post implies that all who oppose the current war and Bush want us to throw flowers at the bad guys. What a condescending ideal that is. It amounts to labeling your opposition cowards and traitors. You try to mask that uber-patriotic side of your personality by lumping everyone you oppose with the specter of the ultra-left and socialism. Why of course you couldn't be the bad guy. These people resemble Marx and Lenin who are proven threats to our American way of life.
It would be real easy to just buy everything you're saying in your post that your support isn't for Bush and his bunch but instead for the concept of aggression against our enemies in the world but that theory just doesn't hold water and I'm not going to let you get away with it. You've made some bone-ass mistakes over the past few years and one of them was somehow believing your opposition wasn't monitoring the very guys you now say you have no respect for like Rush and Hannity. Well, for someone so put off by these losers, you sure matched their talking points and attacks word for word.
If you're now suddenly going back to your libertarian roots and rejecting the hard-core right, I commend you on it. Buchanan has often said some very intelligent things but let's not forget too that the man has had some very unstable times in the past. I'd only embrace the man with a full body condom.
In conclusion though, I truly do not believe there's any reason we should believe you a changed man. A real change doesn't come out of the convenience of following the power. It sucked you in and pieces of that euphoria will never truly leave you. Until you completely understand just how reprehensible this whole era has been to the individual who has seen the American spirit in more than just power and might, there will be no real change.
In a way Tom, maybe we need your views to remind the rest of us what irrational fear and lust for power can do to even the most amazing collection of people and cultures that history has seen. It's kind of ironic that you see yourself as some modern day Paul Revere screaming "The terrorists are coming" and instead I'm using you to remind us that the worst threat is from within.
