I'd like to nominate someone that I would never have believed during his campaign to fit this category. He has however proven to be a man of conviction and seemingly immune to pressure from his party - Jeff Flake, Congressman from Arizona.
Not only is Flake a Republican but he's also a Mormon so, at face value, I should have a natural inclination to have real doubts about his personal philosophy. However, from the moment he came to Washington, it was apparent he wouldn't be bullied by the party. He has vigorously fought pork barrel spending, lobbied extensively for opening up trade and commerce with Cuba, and has not engaged in the partisan sniping that's been so rife over the last decade. I've never heard him invoke the almighty in his speeches nor have I seen him try to gain any influence for his own brand of religion.
He recently lost his seat on the House Judiciary Committee because he didn't coddle to the Republican elite, a real travesty. Were all Republicans like this guy, I might actually consider more of their candidates. It's a shame he doesn't represent my district. Instead I get the privilege of Trent Franks, an absolute sleazebag of a human who not only needs to be out of office but behind bars. Along with Franks, I get the distinction of also being represented by John McCain and John Kyl. Needless to say, any views I have politically are completely ignored by all of them.
