To me, "significant" means "a sign of something important", which I think is fairly close to its root.
If humanity is significant in the vastness of space and time, what is it a sign of? God? If that's the case and one's belief, then why is our existence particularly more significant than all the rest of the universe?
To me, our only real significance in the whole history of the universe is that physics and chemistry came together to produce forms of matter that can ask what its own significance is. And I have a really hard time imagining that we are the only ones.
We are certainly significant to ourselves, and to the Earth, and a little bit to other parts of the solar system, but that's about it.
What makes conciousness and creativity special? Or should I say more special than, say, supernovas producing all the elements heavier than Iron?

- You can call Humanity many things, but unimportant is not one of them.

- I disagree
- We cannot claim "intelligence" is the summum of the universe
- Without intelligence, the Universe may as well not even exist.
