I wouldn't mind seeing the power structure in this country redistributed a bit so that local politics is more relevant again.
Most of the time, people pursue office for the status or power, the urge to be the alpha dog or one of that pack, which isn't good or bad, but simply normal primate behavior. The best are animated by ideas and principles, and often would prefer to go home; the worst, by ideology or a sense of mission, and sometimes by money in the form of influence-buying and other forms of graft.
This is true. The unescapable tragedy of this is that the system selects against those who "would prefer to go home." I have a short list of politicians I wish to God had stayed in the game.
What exactly is the difference between "ideas and principles" and "ideology?"
