Ideology is a system. You can plug a statement or action into it to determine whether it conforms to the ideology, and whether the person who said or did it is one of the anointed or one of the infidels.
Ideas and principles exist independent of a system. It's possible to own several conflicting ideas or principles at the same time, and live with the tension. Equality v. individual achievement, for example, or justice v. mercy. REB, in this thread, talked about his personal conflict, pacifism v. fighting terrorism. People who walk that balance beam will step off in one direction or other, either deliberately or forced by the situation, but will usually get back on it. They're more complex individuals who fine-tune their own way of organizing their lives according to thoughts they prize rather than according to an ideological package.
