I was watching MSNBC, and heard the tape played.

I was yelling at the TV before I heard one word out of a pundit's mouth. Nobody had to tell me I was insulted.

I'll vote against McCain regardless of who the nominee is, because I must, so it almost doesn't matter. Except that it does, to me, because I'm one of those people he's talking about. My family, my friends, my customers are all those people he's talking about.

On the other hand, it's almost a blessing: my disappointment threshold has just been raised. I no longer expect much from him.

He's talking about hope. I hope he realizes how little he, or any elected official, can affect so much of what causes conflict and upheaval in America. He can attempt to fix what has been broken, attempt to rebuild what has been neglected. He can attempt to dismantle the structures that protect the plutocracy. He can attempt to rebalance the budget and pay off the deficit. In short, he can try to knit together the bones in the body politic that have been broken these last 12 years or so. More than that he can't do, and better not promise.

The country is changing again. Conflict is inevitable. It makes people cranky. They have to find their own places in the new patterns. Politicians can't lead to that promised land, but if they're very good, they can keep up.

Does he assume that he knows small towns because he has a convenient theory that sounds good to his supporters? Or does he say what he thinks will play to the room he's in and hope nobody standing in the corridor hears him?
