I don't like the implication that people necessarily do stuff he doesn't identify with because they're compensating for something else.
The whole idea that men go hunting because they are making up for feelings of inadequacy in other areas is stupid. I know enough hunters to know this.
It may just be that the guy from Chicago doesn't understand hunting, not that the guys from rural Illinois are compensating for something. I say the same thing to the guys from rural PA who say that a guy from the city who drinks a latte is a sissy.
We're all different. We enjoy different things for different reasons. Armchair psychology is just a highbrow way of stereotyping people we don't understand.
I'll grant that he didn't mean to be insulting, but he still was.
