And look at the firestorm that acknowledgement of that simple reality has brought Obama. Better politicians who tell you how great it is, how great you are, and how grateful everyone should be because they are American? What a wonderful country, the place of unending opportunity, filled with freedom and simply rife with democracy. A model for the entire world.
That you can say this with such terrible sarcasm is really kind of sad. Most of the people around where I live came here from somewhere else, and if you were to tell them they were better off in their home countries, they'd think you were nuts. You should hear the stories from the Vietnamese.
There's another factor:
Bitter, depressed, angry people, filled with class envy and futility, and trained to wait for Washington to come in and "fix" everything for them, are far more useful to someone from Obama's end of the political spectrum than self-reliant, confident, resilient people who don't feel like they need the government as a substitute parent. The latter point of view used to be far more common in our country, even among the very poor.
