I know.

I don't think he's been lying. I do believe he's trying to look compassionate and sophisticated to his base, but it rubs me the wrong way because I have so much contact with, and so much respect for, people who don't belong to that group.

He could just as easily say that he has lived his life in a different place with a different background than the rural folks who may have trouble supporting him or even believing him because of what they think he believes. He can admit that they do and believe things he doesn't understand too well because he doesn't share that background. He can promise to listen well and try to understand. He can promise to be honest in his disagreements with them, which there will be because they are different than he is, and he can promise to remember he's running to be President of all the people, not just the people he's most like. Those promises he can keep.

That's a lot better than what he said. It admits differences but doesn't indulge in shallow analysis of people that he has spent a day with, if that. It shows a respect for the validity of the viewpoints and activities of people who live in small towns, without promising to become just like them, something that everyone will know is a crock.

He'll never take my advice, though, because he'll never see it. I live in a small town in the Red part of a swing state. People in my demographic are not in his circle.
