...one should avoid coming to statistical conclusions based on newspaper articles. I would guess that there are a lot more pedophiles who are not wearing the cloth than those who are. It would be a difficult survey to accomplish, though.
I heartily agree that the Churches' dealing with these people (possibly with the tacit approval of the local authorities?), has been deplorable. If the Church is unable to deal with the problem in ways other than love and forgiveness (and perhaps, that is how they should), then it is up to the authorities to treat it as common criminality.
However it is accomplished, the behavior must stop.
