The atheists and agnostics don't necessarily want the BSA to change their policies, although it would only benefit the BSA, in my opinion. The Girl Scouts haven't had any image problems at all with conservatives, and they accept everyone. What we do want is for a revered national organization to admit that it does practice discrimination, and to quit claiming the privileged status from which its discriminatory practices bar it. We want to protect our children from being recruited during class time, in our absence, by organizations that are going to reject them based on religion. And also, incidentally, it would be nice if the BSA would quit saying things like "an atheist . . . cannot grow up to be the best type of citizen". (November 25, 1998: Larry Otto, Scout Executive of the Cascade Pacific Council, Boy Scouts of America testifies under oath in a pre-trial deposition. When asked about the above statement, his reply was, "That ís the position of the Boy Scouts of America, yes.") However, saying stupid things is not against the law, so this will remain merely a fond wish.
