Keep in mind Marryanne, you live in one of those places that puts the 'mental' in fundamentalism. I know for sure my boy scout troop could really give a damn. We tried looking over the requirements for the religion merti badge one time in scouts. . . the scout leader coudln;t grasp that I was catholic in fact, that was kinda funny . . kept suggesting that i was eastern orthodox. . . lol, but anyway. PArt of the deal wasI had to go get in contact with a preist that was involved with the boyscouts program and there weren't any, cept for one who was an absolute heretic and I wouldn't speak to him. So I just didn;t worry about it. That merit badge wasn't required anyway. and that was it.
I can remember maybe a church service at 4ncampment though, but I felt complete freedom to say, 'hey, on pricipals I woudl like to sit out this'. and to this day I woudl be floored if they woudl not have let me.
hmm. . . while writing this I remember military day at encampment, where our troop got to spend the day with a soldier from a foreign country (Ft. Lee had plenty of those around). Our was from Jordan. First things the scout master did in guiding our planning was to make sure we considered and accomodated his religious preferences. . . "think guys, what are you gonna to have for breakfast that morning? Are you sure you want to have saugsage?"
unfortunately we didn't get the guy form jordan. . . he didn;t show up. . . but htey did have an extra guy, A paratrooper from Australia, and so we got him
I still remember the camping trips. . and the canoe trips.it was fn, and I certainly dont think 'nonsecular' when I think boyscouts. . . But then again the boyscouts are made up of local chapters. . . and if high preasured religious groups are in your area, I woudl not be suprised to find them applying this in the boy scout troops.
and one last things, yes, we always met in churches. But this means nothing. My Petersburg Art League moved to one after our building was taken out by a tornado, and you don't get any more sevular than that. Its just that churches often lend the use of ther favilities charitabley to other groups, expecially to groups that they see as ones that do community service and the sort. Added to that protestant churches around here all seem to be huge expansive compounds that woudl put the branch davidians to shame.. They got a LOT of room and feel compelled to do something with it. . .
