<If the Boy Scouts prefer to have heterosexual church-going perverts as their leaders, that's just fine.
Mary Anne, The boy scouts do not prefer to have heterosexual church-going perverts. Perverts are kicked out. As a former Boy Scout, and Scout leader, I know what the policies are. A leader may not be the only adult in attendance at any activity, overnight or not. Leaders must have seperate sleeping area from any of the scouts unless he is their father, and then only his sons may be in the tent with him. All leaders must go through training which includes watching out for perverts. All scouts also get to watch a video once a year to help them be aware of perverts in and out of scouts. Of course there are examples where this fails, and perverts operate under the radar screen. The point is the BSA tries very hard to keep them out.
I have noticed that the BSA will no longer accept the Unitarian Universalist pin for their religion requirement because the UUs accept homosexuality and refuse to condemn atheism and agnosticism, and disagree with the Boy Scouts' position on these issues. So now we have people being denied participation based on sexual orientation and on religion. Goodie.
There is no religion requirement. The BSA is Faith-based, but does not kick anyone out because of religious affiliation or lack therof. They may choose not to allow a particular church from becoming charters, if that church does not hold to the same basic standards of the BSA. However if a member of that church wanted to join the BSA through a different charter, then he would not be barred as long as he he follows the moral code set out in the BSA handbook.
The moral code in the handbook, simply states that sexual activities be reserved for marriage, so that the boy can be a good husband and father. I do not have my handbook with me, but could look it up for you, when I get home.
Why is it so bad for an organisation to only accept those, that will uphold its moral teachings? Should all churches be required to accept gays and lesbians as well?
The one argument I will give you, is that the BSA gets some federal funding. Since the federal govmt cannot be exclusionary, than they should halt the funding. To me it is a small price to pay, for me to keep the right of my organization intact.
regards,
Steve G.
