I had a different BSA experience
Back in the 60s, in my troop, religion was not much of an issue (I recall a reference to " a boyscout is reverent" that didn't bother me much).
However, to rise above the rank of second class you had to have your father participate in a camp-out. My father was/is a paranoid schizophrenic alcoholic. As the pressure mounted to get him invloved in BSA, I dropped out with some sadness and shame. They would *not* have enjoyed the results of his participation!
