Re: Celibacy? What celibacy?

I agree with the proposition that some deviants may seek refuge in the priesthood. Most are probably not looking for a hiding place for their sickness. They probably believe they can suppress their sexual impulse as normal heterosexual priests are expected to do. Unfortunately, it is not only difficult to suppress, they also find themselves surrounded by alter boys that trust them.

The church bears the brunt of responsibility for these creeps, not for them being priests but for the cover-ups and worse, the second chances. It is my understanding that there has never been a documented case of a cured pedophile.

Regarding sexuality by priests in general, I am not Catholic but I had a good friend that was Irish and the owner of a Irish pub that was frequented by many (and I mean like 30-40) catholic priests. My impression, from hours of drinking with priests, is that there is not much abstinence among priest, they just don't get married. In fact that is a popular slogan among priest. "Just don't get married."

Yeah I know, you shouldn't generalize based on a few dozen priests you meet in a bar.
