Speaking as an agnostic

I personally believe it's just as presumptious and arrogant to insist that God doesn't exist as it is to insist He does. The short form of agnosticism is simply "I don't know."

I don't know if God exists or not. I respect that others do have a definite belief but I don't. Absence of proof doesn't automatically imply proof of absence.

I don't even know if such a thing as an eternal soul exists, either. Frankly, my skepticism on this one issue is what made me conclude I'm an agnostic in the first place. You see, if there's no such thing as an eternal soul, then the whole notion of an afterlife (a central tenant of many religions) is moot, as are those religions themselves.

Since I don't know the answers to these questions, I don't get on a high horse about the issues one way or the other. If I'm visiting friends who have religious values and want to pray before a meal, I join with them. Refusing to acknowledge their beliefs, especially in their own homes, would be as arrogant as a nonsmoker (as I am) visiting the home of a smoker and telling them they can't smoke in my presence. Their home - their rules.
