re: "Left-leaning Americans"

I would not classify the last elections a huge landlside of a victory or even a mandate of the people. Unless your not an american, he is your president also. Like it or not.
The region, as you define it is in the mess it is in simply because that whole region has hated the existance of the US support Israel since is creation and therefore hates the US. Present day Iran is a creation of the Clinton administration and if we the US were not sitting in Afganistan and Iraq at this very moment god only know what the middle east would look like today. I wonder how Syria and Lebenon would feel in that situation, not to mention all the middle eastern countries that accept the western way of life. Everyone thinks we are only fighting a war in Iraq but the truth of the matter is we a fighting an entire regional terrorist state because thats where the entire modern terrorist way of thinking was born and thrives. The US and OUR president had the sense to take the battle to them rather than letting 911 be the open door to bringing it to us.
I don't think I will let you downplay it into some isolated conflict gone askew.
The only bridge burning going on will be by middle eastern governments not strong enough to take a stand and control it themselves by not killing it off instead of letting it grow an feaster right inside their own countries. Or is that just a clever disguise? Who knows. I would think that you could at least appreciate that "our team" has at least pulled the cloak off of most of the "real" enemies of the US and not sent a cruise missile to bomb an aspirin factory in exchange for a direct attack on american soldiers and active duty war ships.
The only one who seems to be full of shit are those who forgot 911 and refuse to still look at the bigger picture. What do you think would have happened had in the minds of all those evil little terror minds if "our team" had responded in the same typical fashion that "your team" has always responded.
It's not a war in Iraq, it's regional war against terrorism and if your going to fight it then you have to start somewhere and it best not be here. Saddam Hussein was just stupid enough to have provided a good place to start.
