You may be right

I find myself automatically playing their game--this thread is, in many ways, a blast from the past.

At the moment the Right's just being sore losers. I'd hate to see it become institutionalized as, once again, the "CE circle-jerk". It's hard to see how to avoid it, though. To give (demonic) credit where credit is due, the Winger machine has come up with a wickedly effective system of closed-loop rhetoric and worldview. At this point I wonder if there's any topic at all that a Winger can't respond to with boilerplate soundbites and jingoisms. Has Wingerism achieved a totally closed mental topology? Are they even reachable any more across the RightWing event horizon?

It's worth noting that the Right side of this thread has been argued exclusively by a small number of usual suspects. The Conservatives that I think of as "Classics" or moderates are nowhere to be found. Perhaps the only hope of avoiding the CE circlejerk is to appeal to the better half of the Right to come out of hiding and participate. I'd much prefer to talk about alternatives in Iraq, for example, than to endlessly argue whether there's even a problem that might politically embarrass the Right. The election shows that 2/3 of the country is more than ready to move on. It's only the Winger deadenders who are still stuck on defending the indefensible.
