When the illusion of success was still prevalent on the right, the comparison was with World War II, and any comparison with Vietnam was decried as defeatist.
Now that the woeful lack of planning and the wishful thinking about the nature of Iraqi society (Iraq = Paris 1945, complete with flowers for the liberators) has finally become obvious to all, Vietnam is suddenly acceptable as a comparison because it gives the right an opening to blame someone else.
Our Yeti is correct. The Bush White House had a blank check for years with Congress, with the people since 911, and substantially with the press, though I know you will scoff, especially in comparison with the mood and reporting of the late 1960s. The Bush White House served its ideology at the expense of recognizing political and military realities.
