I'm well aware that the single-payer crowd is attempting on many fronts to "ease" us into the socialized medicine pot. The entire SCHIP controversy was based on an attempt to take a Federal program designed to help poor and needy children and "grow" it into the middle class and upper age ranges.
I'm really hoping some state will eventually enact a single-payer system so we can actually see for ourselves what will happen. It could save the rest of us from making a serious mistake.
You talk about eliminating the profit motive. Eliminating the ability to succeed by doing well, and fail by doing poorly. Eliminating competition. What does that leave behind? Marshmallow humanitarianism aside, do you think our government right now operates on "caring?" Have you really looked?
Socialism, to put it simply, doesn't work. It doesn't work for medicine, it doesn't work for cars, it doesn't work for food production, it doesn't work for entertainment, or for pretty much ANY human need that it has tried to meet in our history. The best it can do in the long run is equalize mediocrity.
