This isn't an academic argument. If your point of view wins, I will be forced to abandon whatever health care solutions I have chosen for a monopoly government-enforced system whose primary goal will not be to deliver health care, but to deliver power to a centralized authority through which well over a trillion dollars will pass each year.
That you don't seem to have any fear at all of this concentration of power and destruction of individual choice is depressing. Have you paid no attention at all to what happens when the government runs an entire industry? Defense? Education? Space program? Highways?
Is there ONE of these areas where there is more thought being given to what actually needs to be done as opposed to pumping money to lobbies and favored industries and pumping votes to politicians? Is there one of these government endeavors where the top priority is the supposed goal and not the growth and maintenance of the bureaucracy itself?
Is what we have now in health care efficient? Not as much as it could be. But think about it: is efficiency everything? Is anything involving real choice or competition as "efficient" as something where you are only given one choice?
Don't you get it? This isn't about compassion. Universal health care in the U.S. isn't going to frigging work. I could show you the numbers, but you don't CARE about those unfeeling, nasty numbers.
I'm telling people they can't jump off the edge of the Grand Canyon with cardboard wings, and what I'm getting here is shit about how I just don't want people to fly.
The real bitch is that if you all jump, I get pulled over the edge too.
