In Germany, there's an older, middle aged woman who visits her doctor every morning. She has for over 15 years now. She is always a bit "under the weather" and so the doctor and nurses greet her and the place her under a sun lamp for an hour and have been prescribing her various "very low level medications" which are more like blends of vitamins and stimulants.
What's amazing is she's never "really" been sick in all this time, except once or twice with a bronchial infection. She uses the visit as a social call and the doctors realize she gets motivation to live and her daily visit is a psychological boost to keep her going.
There are MANY like her. Some not so flagrantly abusing the system, but very close. Weekly visits for everything from sore reading eyes that need drops to something to treat halitosis.
Multiply this woman times hundreds of thousands, probably millions, in the US who are also hypochondriacs or borderline hypochondriacs, and you have just another part of the expense picture.
