Tom, I've seen into the heart of government and yes, there are many within its boiling complexity that are there for the right reasons. You are constantly taking the actions of a few extremists and applying their persona to the entire group.
You keep labeling it socialism too. I'm sorry Tom but a few social programs within a democratic framework does not equal socialism. I would hate living in a society that resembled the horrible years of Stalin or Lenin. No sane individual wants that but the unbridled greed that produces fascism is as much of a threat or more to our society.
There is no middle ground for you. You can't see the socialism that already exists in the health care industry and that it always will under the system you want. Our national model now includes requiring employers, those heroes of free enterprise that you so value, to shoulder the burden of providing health care insurance for their employees and it's bringing these titans of industry to their knees financially. They are no longer competitive on a global scale.
Tell me oh wise one how you could start your own company these days and be able to provide your employees with the wonderful benefits you continue to tout without eating up all your profits. Do some homework and look into those costs Tom. Here's the truth. If you started a small business, your employees would have to be on their own. Unless you could pay extremely high salaries, most would probably not be able to shoulder the costs themselves and they'd join the ranks of the millions of uninsured. If they had a catastrophic illness or accident guess who steps in? Could it be the state? Could it be your tax burden? Is it twice as expensive at that stage as if the person had regular care that might have helped in the prevention? (cue Jeopardy music).
You have no answers.
