Yes, it's true...

My grandmother was turned down for several expensive and therefore "unnecessary" operations because she was already in her eighties. What's more unreal is that every widow or widower in Germany pays for their dead spouse's health inusurance as well as their own.

If they refuse to pay, the portion of their pension that is derived from their spouse is stopped. So either way - the system gets the money. You wonder how Germany can afford to give healthcare to everyone...now you know who is footing the bill. All those widows and widowers for as long as they live pay insurance every month for people who are not there.

So now the German healthcare system gets a boost of millions of monthly insurance premiums paid for people who are no longer living.

The old are abused in this manner and no one sees anything wrong with it. Yes, it is a lot like Logan's Run. It's even worse in France and other places though where elders are even less respected and when the heat wave struck and took out thousands - almost no one blinked or shed a tear.

That's why I'm not eager to turn our healthcare over to a socialized system. The money is only part of the picture, the other part is that the quality of "human" care goes down - and dramatically so for those over fifty.
