re: Producing hydrogen locally

Ah, so many strawmen the oil advocates puts out in one post!

First, the Hindenburg myth the oil lobby loves to use against hydrogen vehicles.

BTW Hydrogen fires burn upward until gasoline fires which is why 67 of the 101 folks aboard the Hindenburg lived to tell the tail, and many who dies did so by jumping out in panic instead of waiting for the airship to settle. Now compare that to fire deaths from a convention aircraft in an landing accident that triggers a fire.

Now add to that the simple reality that any pressurized tank used for a hydrogen vehicle will likely survive intact even the worst accident. Do you really know strong a tank must be to hold 10,000 psi? And if it does break open the hydrogen burns up vertically, not horizontally like gasoline does.

As for the home use. DO you have natural gas in your house? One big different is the size of the molecule. Hydrogen is a small molecule, raises quickly and finds a way to disperse through cracks between the ceiling and walls. In sure it does concentrate to blow up like natural gas does. Natural gas on the other hand stays low and contained in a room until something ignites it. If any of these generators blows it will be far more likely from a natural gas leak then a hydrogen one. This is one reason Honda sees the natural gas version only as a stepping stone to one which uses electricity 100%.

In any case any home production system will need to get UL approval or insurance companies won’t allow them. And if anyone knows how to get equipment to malfunction it’s the folks at UL.

Incidentally, do you know there is toy company now selling toy cars powered by hydrogen? Good introduction to the cars they will be driving as adults.

Neat huh… and no explosions yet. Maybe you or this Dr. Zubrin could buy one and try to make it blow up to prove his theory!

And instead of wasting billions of taxpayers dollars on Zubrin designing a system for making hydrogen on Mars maybe NASA could just buy a few of Honda’s units off the shelf and ship them there. I hear there is water on Mars… Of course that would be too easy. And maybe that is what Zubrin is so afraid of when most folks are driving hydrogen cars.

Again, thanks for the laughs, oil apologists are funny, especially when they try to claim they are not being oil apologists.
