Radical advocates have advocated that type of lifestyle for 40 years and it has been repeatedly rejected by Americans Try telling a soccer mom she must give-up her SUV and make her kids bike everywhere. She will look at you like you are nuts. Same with the person who has been successful in life and now owns a luxury car. Sorry but bikes and cars like you advocate are associated with either being poor or socialism, not mainstream culture.
Look at Russia. They lived that type of lifestyle under communism. When failed and they were free of it what then they do? Buy cars, lots and lots of big cars and SUVs. Same with China once the folks there started to become rich enough to do so.
The only way your prediction would come through is if people are forced into that live style by no replacement energy sources being developed for autos. Perhaps that is why you and Zubrin propagandize against hydrogen, so you could force the world to living your life style instead of the life style the want to live.
Sorry, I am an American and like most Americans I like my SUV. I like being able to carry my kids and their friends to baseball practice and football games. And its great for tailgate parties. Your super tricycle might fit your life style, but not mine or most Americans. That is why no automakers will build them. Unlike aerospace, success in the auto industry is based free market capitalism and giving the public what they want - not what some Ph.D. tells them they should want.
