in several photographs...but that didn't stop the firebombing of Dresden did it?
What is trying to be conveyed is that Saddam was never the US' buddy. We used him as was convenient and he used us - the same relationship we have with about fifty other nations right now. When we realized he was more than just an uneducated tyrant useful in keeping the Ayatollah Khomeni and the Iranians busy, but was fully a "Senor Psychopath" we started to pullback our support and he leaned more heavily on support from the German and French governments. He was certain everyone would look the other way as he rolled over Kuwait and at this time he had two years production (88-90) run of biological weapons from Al Hakam and other production sites. He felt omnipotent - he felt that he had "arrived." No more kowtowing to the US or anyone - it was his divine right to start reclaiming "ancestral" lands.
However, because Kuwait is the doorstep of Saudi Arabia we had to protect ARAMCO and keep the house of Saud from being replaced by an even more fanatical fundamentalist regime. Ever since the fall of the Shah, the US has watched psycho fundamentalists plunge fledgling westernized nations into third world hellholes - undoing decades of work completed from after WWII. One falls down and another pops up. The internet and literacy are the only hope for pulling the middle east out of the dark ages. Years of inbreeding and chronic illiteracy among families in the middle east has made them susceptible to clerics' fanatical rantings and so the US is basically working in the asylum in these regions. It's like the middle ages of Europe when the Church tried to control it all. By intimidation fear and ignorance - fundamentalism persists. Folks who still in the 21st century are unable to realize what a meteorite is - and that it is not a sign from any god - need serious educational assistance. With 42% illiteracy in Iraq - that's 42% of the people who can be led around by the nose by shouting fanatics.
Yes, the middle ages are alive and well in the middle east and in some other parts of the world - it's only because they are using western weapons and inventions making their ignorance that much more dangerous for themselves and anyone who ventures into the abyss.
Honor is perceived as stupidity by someone who is always trying to get the upperhand and does not have the wisdom of the west which says killing is bad and being helpful is good.
You're applying western thought in a non-western region. Religion is a tool to maintain social order. When the natual mentalities are more violent - the religion too, tolerates and embraces this inherent violence if it wishes to survive. Fundamentalists have embraced the most barbaric aspects of the Koran and keep their followers in chains more unbreakable than if they were made of titanium.
To be honorable or compassionate is to be a coward and a fool to the sorts of folks who take life indiscriminately. No points are awarded outside your western ethics class. They respect strength and despise weakness.
Just ask the folks who were working at the UN in Baghdad.
