re: the Burn Unit

"To defend the use of napalm makes no sense. It's like defending mass burning at the stake."

What you do against prisoners and what you do against combatants is dissimilar.

"Second:
Why on Earth do we need tons of VX? Is there some need to gas another nation, or do we just keep it because we can? "

I think we are getting rid of them at cost of billions of dollars, jointly with Russians getting rid of theirs. Why did we have them in first place?
Probably seen as a back-up in case nukes were somehow negated- [I can't imagine realistically how this could be done, other than maybe politicans getting rid of the nukes, so in that way it could be a back up. Another use of them, would be if enemy used them, and we didn't want to use nuke option in a specific situation- if nothing else, it requires the enemy to wear protective gear & this slows them down. As far as lethality, the more lethal the smaller the weapon package and thereby increasing mobility and lowers cost of "transporting" material to the target area- if you are going to use any chemical weapons it's better to use the most concentrated form you can make.]
