You know, scarily, in the midst of your diversion, you stumbed upon a point

The truth is FEMA and DHS ARE fattened Federal pigs incapable of justifying the funding they receive with actual product.

In this sense, like manyother government agencies there is a disconnect between funding and actual results.

Department of Education anyone?

Department of the Interior?

You waited so long FEMA changed its webpage. The quotes of assistance I had were unedited, bulleted points on the page directly linked to and the quotes were valid at the time posted.

To tell you the truth, I'm not too surprised they deleted them. The closer one looked at them - one realized how little they actually were doing for Rita.

The FBI and "G-men" for decades lived off of the reputation made during the sixties by TV shows of the same name.

"Public perception" goes a long way to appearing like one has some real gameplan and sharpies at the helm. The sad truth is most Federal agencies are clueless and filled with less than competent paper pushers who like the security and benefits package of a government job.

The head of FEMA was let go because he made it a bit too obvious that it is all illusion. That there are NOT folks taking shifts 24/7 keeping abreast of potential escalatable disasters or that FEMA or the DHS could adequately respond to anything identified in anything approaching realtime.

That's a no-no.

Its all about public confidence and perception. By putting someone in the role who has more "street cred" it may change absolutely nothing about FEMA or its capablity, but it does provide that all-important public perception need.

So since Tom has already run you ragged here, I'll give you credit for introducing your only valid point to the Federal incompetence argument - namely that DHS and FEMA are WAAAY overfunded for what they actually do.
