The suspicion (certainty) that the levees would fail has been a fact for decades, yet they have never failed in the face of previous hits and near misses by other storms.
The Mayor and the Govenor had a perfect opportunity to play "chicken little" and scream at the top of their lungs that the levee will fail, yet it is Bush that should have been screaming?
I will not defend the fired FEMA director since I don't really know what he knew and when he knew it but to say that he only learned of the Superdome refugees might have meant that he only learned of their plight. Everyone knew that the city had put people in the dome and everyone assumed that if you put people somewhere, the responsibility to take care of them in the aftermath is a given. Who knew that the Mayor had put 10,000 people there and forgot about them?
A government is elected to do as much or as little as the people want it to do and are willing to pay for. If the government is seen as failing by a majority it will no doubt fall.
So far so good for the Bush camp

- One thing you said, in all of that glop, was meaningful
- You missed the main point and dodged others
- Which was easy, because there was no main point, nor any others
- Not Federal Troops

- So what if he lied. So what if Bush lied. What's the difference?
- Context
- Agreed, start to finish
- go ahead, blame Bush.
- For non-response by an agency administered by the Executive branch of which he is the head? Sure!
- go ahead, blame Bush.
- Levee failure
- This is silly
- what preparation would have prevented the levy failure?

- for every thread, spin,spin,spin
- Lets assume everyone knew the levy was going to fail 60-70 hours before Katrina.
- Thats sort of the point- they *should* have known the levees were going to fail 36-48 hours out, and ended up doing nothing
