If you wish to fight on the battlefield of history, you must deal with the facts as they are.

"What if" only works in entertaining speculative fiction.

You can't possibly say with certainty that the Allies would have acted in a particular way without the Soviet Union. The dynamic between Germany and Russia was essential to the way the war played out in its end game. I can also venture to suggest that, without the Soviet Union, America would have had no space program to speak of, because the German rocket scientists might have all stayed home. The thing about speculation is that nobody knows.

And if we are to avoid making comparisons between Hitler and Bush, which I agree are ludicrous, how about ceasing the equally ludicrous comparison between Saddam and Hitler which occurs so often on the other side? Or, if that's not possible, maybe we can extend that metaphor and I can start making comparisons between Bush and FDR! Bush would look like a midget, and maybe we could examine the impact of the war on the people at home, and on the families of the leadership, as a comparative thing.
