America, with the germ of our democratic institutions, was formed by its colonial experience.

The Revolution persuaded the British to leave.

The Civil War was fought over slavery, but just as much over states' rights. The Emancipation Proclamation only freed slaves in the Confederacy. The slaves in MD and elsewhere continued to be slaves until the Radical Republican Congress amended the Constitution. American blacks continued in a state of abject poverty and oppression following Reconstruction. Their emancipation was given real power by the non-violent civil rights movement of the 1960s.

WWII and the Nazis: well, you have me there. The Nazis started the war, and those attacked fought back. I ask you, who started it?

In Iraq, we have certainly driven Saddam from power. Whether the Iraqis have been freed remains to be seen. They may simply have had one type of oppression removed to have another take its place. In the meantime, thousands of them have been killed.
