Flame » in reply to But it still took a War to get Independence from the British

Yes, Robert, there was a Revolution...

...and the war was part of it.

But...

America built itself on the courage of people who crossed the ocean and face an environment they had never seen before.

America built itself on the courage of people who helped the newcomers, even though it cost them dearly.

America built itself on the courage of people brought here in bondage who, nevertheless, preserved a sense of dignity, morality and culture.

America built itself on the courage of people who gathered in town meetings and statehouse legislatures to govern themselves and trust their neighbors.

American built itself on the courage of people who went west into the frontier to settle new lands, even though the British Crown opposed their actions.

America built itself on the courage of people who opposed the unjust wielding of power through the courts and newspapers (the Zenger trial), through joint action (the committees of correspondence), through inventive political organization (the Continental Congress), and through a willingness to negotiate with the Crown before going to war, and with each other rather than war among themselves.

Without these factors, most of them entirely nonviolent, the war would have been unnecessary. There would have been no America to need independence. The freedom was established first, and not by musket or sword.
